    Aug 31, 1917 was on the reg. for service turned down heart problems. I have his card. [HartleyRay.FTW]

    Mom told this story about grandpa. He was engaged to a Verona Jones and she went West had a baby by grandpa. After she left he married grandma. The Jones girl married a Miller after she came back. Mom said she (Jones) come to see grandpa when she (Mom) was small and grandpa went to the road and talked to her. Never heard anymore from her.
    On court house marriage records it has Ina name as Iva Hughes, him just as R. E. Hartley. They were married by E. D. W. King.

    In local paper Ray Hartley is logging on Cow Run in April 30, 1912 newspaper.
    In same paper Andy Fox helped Melton Miller build a new barn.

    My grandfather died on my sister Imogene Hoschar Shamblin 23rd birthday.

    OBITUARY The Parkersburg News.

    Raymond Edward Hartley, 70, Cottageville, Rt. 3, died yesterday morning at 10 A. M. in St. Joseph's Hospital of a heart condition.
    He was a retired farmer and stockman and was born Feb. 11, 1890 at Cottageville, the son of the late Thomas Edward Hartley and Mary Elizabeth Carr Hartley.
    Survivors include his wife, Ina Hartley; one son, Edward Hartley, Cottageville; three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Hoschar, Cottageville, Mrs. Ruby Simmons, Lowell, OH, and Mrs. Garnet Hunt, Amhurst, OH; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Casto funeral home Evans, with the Rev. Armour Sayre, of Sandyville and the Rev. I. J. McCollum of Evans, officiating during the service.
    Burial will be in the Otterbein Cemetery, near Evans. The body is at the Casto funeral home where friends may call until time of the services. mhf

    Ella Arzina "Ina" Hughes Hartley, 90, of Cottageville, WV, died Tuesday in Jackson General Hospital, following a short illness.
    She was a member of the Antioch United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Antioch Ladies' Aid.
    Surviving; Son, Edward Hartley of Cottageville, Mrs. Mabel Hoschar of Cottageville, Ruby Simmons of Lowell, Ohio; Mrs. Garnet Hunt of Amherst, Ohio; brother, Dorsie Hughes of Vienna; sisters, Mrs. Dora Barnette of Mineral Wells, Mrs. Minnie Guice of Parkersburg, Edith Sayre of Thornville, Ohio, Pearl Bennett of Lucasville, Ohio, Mrs. Nellie Dailey of Columbus, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
    Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m. at Casto Funeral Home Chapel, Evans, wi th the Rev. Curtis Sayre officiating. Burial will be in Otterbein Cemetery.
    Friends may call after 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the funeral home.

    The brothers and sister listed here were her half brothers and sisters. Her mother and father was never married.

    My grandmother Ella Hartley was in the St. Josephs Hospital in Parkersbur g, WV July 1, 1925, come home on Saturday July the 18th Saturday.
    Her parents T. B. and S. O' Brien at time of her death she was a widow age 41y 10m 22d, so John B. would have died before 1900 but his birth and death doesn't make him 39 at time of his death like records at Court House shows.

    I found 5 children so something is wrong. Could be the number of children she had.

    If you look at the marriage certificate you will see that R.E. Hartley married Ina Hughes on 18 Oct 1914. Cold hard facts on a piece of paper does not make a thing so. Nicknames were more common in our area than given name. You could go a life time and not know what a persons given name.

    Thomas Edward Hartley , son of Edward and Elizabeth Hartley was Born A pr il 13, 1856 and departed this life March 17, 1933 age 76 years, 11 mo nt hs and 4 days. He was one of a family of nine children, six boys and t hr ee girls of whom one sister and three brothers preceded him in death.
    He was united in marriage to Mary E. Carr, December 30, 1878. To th is un ion were born 2 children Cora B. Ball, Who was Born Oct. 7, 1879 a nd Raym ond E. Hartley Born Feb. 11, 1890 an adopted daughter, Lena Carri er Hartl ey was Born November 16, 1896, all of whom survive him. He leav es 6 livi ng grandchildren one grandson Johnnie T. Ball preceded him in de ath by abo ut 11 years.
    Mr. Hartley was not easily understood. To some he may have appeared g ru ff in manner but to those who were intimately acquainted with him he ap pea red as he really was a kind and obliging neighbor and friend ever r ea dy to help a neighbor in trouble or when sickness come he was rea dy to he lp in any way as the writer of this brief sketch can testify, com ing eve ry day to inquire after the sick and offer his services in any way .
    To him it was a pleasure to lend a tool of any kind to a neighbo r. He a lways belittled a favor done anyone, expressing himself th at it didn't am ount to much and making one feel as though the neighbor h ad done him a fav or for asking one of him. He will be sadly missed by h is relatives and fri ends. Peace to his ashes; rest to his soul.

    This is the daughter of Ernest Rand.
    Eileen E. White, 63, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Sistersville died Tue sd ay in the Venice Hospital.
    She was born at 'Cottageville, a daughter of Ernest D. Ran and the la te Sy lvis Mahon. She was a member of the United Methodist Church,
    Surviving; husband. William White; her father; one daughter, Marilyn McK en zie of Lansing, Mich.; One sister Mildred Gist of Dayton, Ohio; two gr and children.
    She was preceded in death by one son.
    Services were held sunday at Eckles Funeral Home. Sistersville, with t he R ev. Jeffery Lovely officiating. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemet er y, Sistersville.

    O B I T U A R Y
    Mrs. Mary Florence Flowers, daughter of Solomon S. and Mary Durst Boyer, departed this life at her home in Mt. Alto, West Virginia February 23, 1950. She was born February 14, 1870; age 80 years nine days. ( maybe 1871 1900 census)

    She was united in marriage to Alfred Bertrum Flowers July 21, 1895. To this union were born five daughters Mrs. Ella Arzina Hartley and Mrs. Pearl Bennett of Cottageville; Miss Mary Hazel Flowers of Lucasville, Ohio; Mrs. Edith V. Sayre of Thornville, Ohio, Mrs. Edna Thornton of Pt. Pleasant, and Bernard E. Flowers at home.
    She leaves to mourn their loss husband and all the children; one brother Elsworth Boyer of Leon; three half brothers, John, Charles and Stevie Boy er of Pennsylvania. Three sisters and one brother preceded her in d eat h. Other Survivors include 21 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

    She was converted and joined the Baptist Church in early life. She w as a kind and loving mother, always ready to help some one in need. She had been in ill health for some time.
    Funeral services was held at the Hopewell Baptist Church at Mt. Alto Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with the pastor officiating and Chuch choir singing.
    Burial was in the Blaine Memorial Cemetery at Cottageville.

    A precious one from us has gone.
    A voice we loved is stilled.
    A place is vacant in our home
    That never can be filled.

    (Ella Arzina was a half sister to the rest her father was Charles Hughes. She was raised by Charles Hughes parents, William and Margaret Her grandm an Hughes, from the time Mary married the Flowers..)


    Mary, father was in the Civil War he is buried at Mt. Heborn Cemetery, M t. Alto, WV.


    I remember seeing her once Grandma took Imogene and me to see her at M t. Alto she had not been well when we went Mr. Flowers left. Grandma said hed id not care for her. Grandma would have only been 4 when she married Mr. F lowers. Grandma, dad, Charles W. Hughes parents raised her.

    There is a Jeremiah Dickinson Boyer age 3 years buried at Bethel Cemetery in Mason Co. give parents as S.S. and E. J. Boyer.

    In the Mt. Hebron cemetery there is a Margaret (Boyer) Donahue born 18 19 died 1866.

    (This is from newspaper articles most likely belong to this family. I am putting them here till I fine where they go.
    Oct. 12 1917 Mr. Boyer of Mt Alto commenced his school in the lower room Monday.
    Oda Boyer little daughter is sick with typhoid fever. (Sept 28, 1917))


    S. S. Boyer 72 and Malinda Reynold 65 both of Millwood married. This was in newspaper June 8, 1917.

    He died age 87y 11m 2d.
