    Died:
    Cecil Absten, Sr., 87, of Leon, WV, went to be with the Lord, while surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Huntington.

    He was born September 30, 1929, in Leon, WV, the son of the late Landis and Goldia Hope (Warner) Asten. His brother, William Absten also preceded him in death.

    He married his living wife, V. Hope (Sayre) Absten on April 22, 1948. They celebrated 67 years, 9 months of marriage together.

    He was a member of the Wolfe Valley Baptist Church where he attended regularly. He was a retired foreman/carpenter from Denny Hill Company at the Union Carbide plant in Institute, WV, for over 30 years. He enjoyed many years of hunting, fishing and camping with friends and family. He spent many years playing gospel music on his guitar as well. Playing in the snow with his vehicles and pampering his many pets was something he enjoyed too.

    In addition to his wife, V. Hope Absten he leaves seven children, Cecil, Jr. “Bud” (Sue) Absten, John (Debi) Absten, Chuck (Karen) Absten, James (Jody) Absten, Norma Bush, Dianna Mullinex, Christina (Ross) Young; 15 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; brothers, Lee (Isabelle) Absten and Larry (Donna) Absten; sister, Ruth DeWeese and a sister-in-law, Joan Absten.

    Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, February 4, 2017, at the Point of Faith Church, Point Pleasant, WV, with the Rev. Jim Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Church Cemetery, Leon, WV. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, at the Point of Faith Church, Point Pleasant. Arrangements have been entrusted to Casto Funeral Home, Evans, WV.

    John Laban Sayre, son of Daniel Boone "Coon" Sayre and Nancy Alma King, married 11 June 1914, in Mason Co., West Virginia, USA, to Lucretia F. Stone. John and Lucretia had 10 children: Daniel Reuben "Coon" Sayre, John Hasen Sayre Sr., Gerald B. Sayre, Syble S. Sayre, Anna Mae Sayre, Gloria Ruth Sayre, Pearlie France Sayre, Viola Sayre, Vivian Hope Sayre, and Ina Jean Sayre.

    John Laben Sayre, 102, of Leon, died Sunday, April 2, 1995, at his home following a brief illness.
    Born Sept. 3, 1892, in Jackson County, he was a son of the late Daniel Bennett and Nancy A. (King) Sayre. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lucretia Sayre, who died in 1976, son, Ruben D. Sayre, and two daughters, Anna Mae Barr and Viola Faye Sayre.
    A farmer, he was a former employee of the B&O Railroad, the Selby Shoe Company in Portsmouth, Ohio, and was a member of the Rockcastle United Methodist Church.
    Survivors include three sons, John H. Sayre of Dunbar, Gerald B. Sayre of Nitro, Pearly F. Sayre of Leon; four daughters, Vivian Hope Absten, Ina Jean Greenlee, Gloria R. Barr, Sybil S. Phillips Campbell, all of Leon; sister, Nancy McDaniel of Powell, Ohio; 38 grandchildren, 96 great-grandchildren, 45 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    The funeral will be Thursday, April 6, 11 a.m. at the Casto Funeral Home in Evans with the Rev. Harless Cook and Rev. Gerald Sayre officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Cemetery, Leon. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
