My cousin Dollie Francis Miller-Ratliff died yesterday afternoon, Dec 11, 2012. My last memory of Dollie was seeing and hearing her laughter. She came out to Johnstown, in July, when my mother died. Someone was reminiscing about some long ago happening. She began laughing. She had a beautiful laugh. When she laughed her eyes twinkled and her face would glow. I regret now that we did not take pictures. We have lost so many over the past few years.

Dollie Francis Miller-Ratliff, age 67, passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Dollie was born Dec 22, 1944. She was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church. Retired from Groveport Madison Local Schools.

Preceded in death by husband Everett "Shorty" Ratliff, her father Otha Earl (Bill) Miller and her mother Iona Margaret Thomas-Miller-Stone.

She is survived by her sons, Larry and Gary Miller; daughter, Crecy Young; granddaughter, Patricia Dalton; grandson, William "Eric" Triplett; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sisters, Stella Johnson, Lou Ann Arthur, Melinda "Sissy" Sayre and Melody Donohew; brothers, James and Mark Miller; life long friend, Lois Mann; many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be Friday, December 14, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at the O. R. WOODYARD CO. CHAPEL, 1346 S. High Street, where the funeral service will be Saturday 9:30 a.m. Interment Obetz Cemetery.

Old News Uncovered
Jackson Herald October 25, 1901. The Headline was “GROUND TO DEATH BY WHEELS”. Mrs. Nancy Smith Run over by the Locomotive, Living but Twenty Minutes.
About noon Tuesday Mrs. Nancy Smith, widow, was killed by the engine of the R. E. M.C. V., near the crossing in front of the Carson Co’s West Ripley Store, living but 20 minutes.
The unfortunate woman was the widow of the late Jackson Smith, of near Mt. Alto, who had been dead five years. She was the mother of David Smith of Cow Run, William Smith of Mason County, Mrs. B. F. Ridenour and Mrs. Thad Bush of School House, Mrs. Brig Sherly, widow, and Mrs. Daniel Webster of Fairplain. She was 81 years old and highly respected by all.
She was returning from a ten day visit with Mrs. Webster, intending to go first to her son David’s and was anxious to procure her ticket and be gone. She was accompanied by her son-in-law, Mr. Webster. The train was on the crossing and Mr. Webster advised that they walked down the track a few steps before attempting to cross. Mrs. Smith caught a foot and fell; her son-in-law seized her and tried to get her out of the way of the train, which was in motion when they started to cross, but was unable to do so until the pony-trucks, the drive wheels, and one pair tank wheels had passed over her left foot and right thigh, mashing them into pulp. She was removed after he train stopped. Consciousness from the shock was never recovered and death followed twenty minutes later. The remains were interred in Hopewell Cemetery Wednesday.
Engineer Atkinson was at the throttle at the time of the fatality. He had just looked front at a clear track and that moment had his eye in the rear on the brakemen who were dropping a car. No blame attaches to him.
The road has been in operation since September 1888 – thirteen years, and but two persons had been killed previously by the trains, viz: Deputy Sheriff Isaac Sayre and Mr. John Hockenberry.
Copied from Micro-film by Ada Ruth Sayre. Thanks Ada.
Note: Jackson Smith died 19 Jan 1896. Nancy’s full name included a middle name Caroline. Maiden name was Ankrum.

DONALD BLAINE THORNTON

Donald Blaine Thornton, 58, of Denver, CO, formerly of Evans, WV, died October 3, 2012, following an extended illness.

He was born May 12, 1954, a son of Hazel Sayre, of Evans, and the late Alfred Thornton.

olarship finalist.

Donald was stricken with a debilitating form of arthritis while still in his 20’s and endured the pain to work in his field with many different companies, both in Columbus and Denver.

Don moved to Denver in 1990, for the climate that helped his condition, and he would spend time in the mountains with his dogs enjoying the beauty of God’s creation.

In addition to his mother, other survivors include his longtime friend, Becky Hascall and her daughter, Michaela, both of Denver; sister, Deborah Thornton of Leroy; brother, Kevin Thornton and his wife Janet of Ravenswood; nieces, Jacqualin Thornton of Hurricane, and Jessica Burch of Millwood, and two great nieces, Jamie and Jasmine Naylor of Millwood.

As per his wishes he will be cremated and his ashes, along with those of his dogs, will be put in a special place in the Rocky Mountains. The family will hold a service in his memory at a later date. Casto Funeral Home, Evans, WV, is assisting the family.
