Notes |
- Clyde was known in his family as "John". He was given that name by his mother. She said he looked so much like his grandfather John Miller was her reason for nick-naming him "John". In early years he and his brother Otha (Bill) sprouted the hillside in the Evans Flats, (on the north side of WV 87) for fifty cents a day. Clyde and Bill used the money to buy a twenty-two rifle. That rifle in the years following was used to shoot a many a coon from a tree and more groundhogs that you can count. It was also used at "butchering time" to kill the pigs for slaughter. I believe the gun is still in the family. It is owned by Bill's son Jim Bob.

Notes |
- Sometime in 1949 or 1950 it was decided to move the little house that was located in the “long bottom” (meadow) across from the Hoshar Farm. The little house was moved to where the barn, blacksmith shop, well and the main house were located. Grandpa and Grandma Miller would move into this one-room house. The little house was moved in the fall after the crops were brought in. As it worked out it was the week of Thanksgiving that this was to be done. Some of the local men were called into help with this job. Among those present were Melvin Donohew, Cliff Hughes, Lawrence (Bunk) Hughes and who ever else showed up. As a child I remember the house being moved but I thought it all happened in one day. According to Melvin it took place over several days.
The house was jacked up on one side and a skid (log) was rolled under that side. The other side was then jacked up and skids placed under that side. Some how two teams of horses hooked onto skids and the house was moved. The horses were Bird and Bell, Grandpa’s horses, and Doll and Pearl. Dad’s horses. Someway some how the house was finally put on blocks near the well and shop. Eventually Grandpa and Grandma moved into the house. The old barn, house, and the blacksmith shop our gone these days but the little house lives on where it was placed close to sixty years ago.

 | Country Bumpkin This photo was taken on our farm at Flatwoods about 1943 The chicken house in the left of the picture burned to the ground about 1947, killing all of the baby chickens. The fire started from a kerosene brooder. A brooder is a piece of equipment that was used to keep baby chicks warm. This was heartbreaking to us as a family but a big financial set back.
On the hillside in the background, was the home of a Jersery Bull. The fence on this property was not very good and sometimes the bull would escape. Across the road to our house he would come. Mom, Sonny and I would be held captive until Dad came home from the fields to chase him off, usually with a 16 gage shotgun loaded with salt.
