This church and cemetary is named for Samuel Smith family who settled here at a early date. In 1818, a Methodist minister by the name of Francis Wilson preached the first sermon in the Union District. Later in 1823 -- he organized the first church society at the home of Moses Knapp. The members were: Samuel, Jane, Isaac and Rachel Smith, Moses, William and John Knapp, Reuban and John Harrison Andrew Waugh, Jacob Newell, and William Hanson. In 1840 they formed the Smith Methodist Church. The members at this time were: Jacob, John, Preston and Fanny Newell, Isaac, Rachel,Strother, Samuel, Gideon, Elizabeth,and Burnell Smith,William and William (Jr.) Knapp, Jane McDermitt, Charles, Abraham, and Sarah Baker, and the Reverend A.L. Lyda. A log church was built overlooking the valley of 13 mile Creek. It stood until about 1900 when it was torn down and the present church was built by Samuel Stewart, grandson of William and Mary Stewart.
